Welcome to the Railway Herald IT Team's Development Blog. This part of the site, is designed to provide a two-way communication of idea's and suggestions, while keeping those users who have an interest in what we are doing more up-to-date with proceedings.
Through these pages, we'll keep you up to date on any problems that may have occurred, any issues or bugs that have been discovered and also giving you a glimpse into what we are working on, along with announcing new features. We encourage you to provide your thoughts and comments on these new features as well as reporting any potential problems that you have found with the current system and any suggestions on ways that it can be improved.
It is not our intention to post information and entires on this blog every day, as that would simply detract from the development time, but we will, keep readers updated on a regular basis, or you can check our RSS feed, which will be updated whenever a new entry is posted.
If you would like to make a suggestion or comment on a blog entry, then please do so by clicking here. The more feedback and constructive suggestions we recieve the more we can ensure that the site and Railway Herald magazine as a whole develops as you would like it to.

Help & Support Posted By: Web Team at 23.03.
When the new site was originally launched, back in November 2009, we had plans to get the full Help & Support section up and running within a few days, one to two weeks as a maximum. Well best laid plans always seem to go wrong somehow!
Its not excuse, but pressure of other work simply pulled our limited resources away from it. However, we've been busy writing the missing sections over the past few days and are making good progress with getting these up and running, so hopefully by the end of this coming week, the Help & Support section should be substantially more complete than it currently is.

Searching through Images Posted By: Web Team at 20.44.
There are many things currently on the go in the background with the RH web team, and several are destined to reach fruition in the coming couple of months. The first and foremost item will be a simple search system for the Imaging Centre. We're working on a more advanced version that will tailor results more to your search terms, but initially the simple option will provide a quick and easily way of searching through over 30,000 pictures for a particular locomotive or location.
We are looking at ways in which we can make the locations more accessible and would welcome feedback from you, the users on how we do this. For photographers, accessing up to date imagery of possible locations is a key requirement so the question is being asked, how would you find the simpliest way of doing that? It might be a simple search, it might be regional or map based, or perhaps you have other ideas? Let us know!

Technical Gliches Posted By: Web Team at 14.06.
Well after our slightly delayed launch, the site went live on Monday 9th November, shortly after 19.00. The response from readers has been extremely positive, with several good suggestions being made on further improvements and a whole host of very kind comments! Quite amazingly in the first 48 hours of being live, people looked at over 39,000 images on the Imaging Centre. We've made several tweaks over the past couple of days, to solve a few minor bugs that were still present and also to make some pages work better. The display order for the gallery pages (Today, Last Week, Last Fortnight) has been changed, so that the show in the same order as the main page and Imaging Centre home page, and we've also corrected a minor bug with Image Statistics graph which should now be reporting image views correctly for members.
We're working hard to get the Help & Support section fully up and running, apologies to those people who have looked for extra information and not found it. With the pressure of getting Issue 200 out, we simply ran out of time. Hopefully another few days and it should all be there.
One comment that came back was that it wasn't easy to find specific classes, locomotives or pictures from the various tramways. Well people may have noticed that our 'Class by Class' feature has gone - don't worry its coming back! The re-write of the software (to include the pages within the search facility and to extend it to the DMU and EMU classes) is not quite complete, but we're working on it. There is now a new button (yes, its only two days old and we're adding to it!) for 'Light Rail & Metro Systems' which will allow people to browse through pictures of the tramways and London Underground far quicker and a lot easier than before!
We welcome your comments and feedback, so please do keep them coming!

We're almost there! Posted By: Web Team at 14.46.
A technical problem with the new mail server has had a knock-on delay to launching the new site, so we're now aiming for 18.00 rather the planned 13.00. Generally the whole of the new site is up and running, although sections of the Help & Support system are still being uploaded.
